Bone health in children with lupus
Children with lupus are at risk for bone loss. Both the disease and the effects of drugs used to control lupus can impact bone development in children who are still in the process of growing. In this video, Dr. Emily Von Scheven, director of pediatric rheumatology at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center, discusses the issues surrounding bone health in children with lupus and other health issues associated with treatment of lupus in children and adolescents.
The Lupus Foundation of America is the only national lupus organization with a dedicated program specifically for research on lupus and children. Dr. von Scheven is the recipient of a grant through the Foundation's Michael Jon Barlin Pediatric Lupus Research Program.
